Principles

The current UTM is a 50 KN load capacity floor mounting type electro-mechanical testing system. A load transducer (load cell) mounted in series with the specimen to measure the applied load. The load cell converts the load into electrical signals that the control system measures and displays. The use of an extensometer during the test also provides more accurate direct measurement and closed-loop control of specimen displacement.

Capabilities

  • Used for static testing in tensile or compression, tensile creep and relaxation (for polymers).
  • Depending upon the test setup, additional tests can be performed like flexure, creep, peel, tear, cyclic and bend tests.
  • Several mechanical properties can be measured such as elastic modulus, yield strength, tensile strength, and ductility.

Applications

  • Measure mechanical properties of different materials:
    • Ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
    • Polymers.
    • Ceramics and construction materials.
  • Examination of mechanical behavior at different loading and temperature conditions.
  • Mechanical evaluation of components in aerospace, automotive and electronic industries.
